In the early 2000’s, librarians from the Illinois State University Library in Normal, Illinois, began working with a community group to offer conversations on public topics of critical concern. Librarians have led the research teams providing background materials and meeting tools. They also serve as facilitators for community deliberative forums. Timely topics have included “Partisanship: Is It Crippling Our Democracy? What Are the Choices?†and on the state budget – “A $13 Billion State Budget Deficit-What Is That Costing You and Me?†The political engagement of young people is a central reason for the Political Engagement Project; Illinois State University is one of only eight institutions chosen by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to address political disengagement by college students. Chad Kahl, the librarian leading this effort, is an active participant in the American Democracy Project of AASCU.
